Louis-Theophile Hingre Biography
Théophile Hingre Louis is a painter, a sculptor, an illustrator and a French poster artist.
He was a specialist in animal sculpture. Louis was born Théophile HINGRE rue du Four Gaudon in Ecouen (Seine et Oise) on November 9, 1832.

At the age of twelve he went to Paris, in the workshops of MM. GERVAIS and POSSOT to learn carving ornamental appropriate for the manufacture of bronze, which he continued in until his twenty-fifth year. At age 19 he married Louise Dailly with whom he had 4 children: Maximilian, Clementine, Marguerite and Leon.

His life as an artist will involve being a recognized dimension citizen (Jury Member State Department of the Seine from 1896 to 1906, Officer Academy in 1899 and an Officer of Public Education in 1908).

At the same time, his Republican orientation, hailed in the Mayor's funeral oration d'Ecouen, led him to be close to Louis White. Hingre made ephemeral sculptures, during this time period, in connection with "Republican banquets," the photos describe this agreement between the two men.

This proximity of view forced them to go abroad to England, once in 1848 and another time in 1858. While the politician expressed notably by writing (letters of England, History of the French Revolution), the artist, Hingre, worked for 7 years as a sculptor ornaments in the home of Elkington Birmingham.  Here, he is encouraged to do his first studies of animals.  From his exile, he will not be forgotten in the French Salons des Artistes, where he will exhibit when 1860.

Upon his return to England in 1869, he lived in Paris, 36, rue de la Folie-Méricourt. He took part in some competitions the Central Union of Decorative Arts, where he won two major prizes, (1000fr and 300fr). Hingre continuined to exhibit nearly every to fairs for he had numerous commissions’ from goldsmiths.

By the 1890's, his admiration for Alphonse Mucha led him to be recognized painter of that genre by producing some promotional materials in the Art Nouveau style.

In addition to his awards, as a sculptor, to the various fairs, he won a gold medal at the International Exhibition Collective worker in 1878, his qualities as an artist have earned her collaborator Universal Exhibition of 1889 (medal bronze) and 1890 (silver medal). . His latest project dates back to 1910, he was 78 years. He died a year later on November 12, 1911, at his daughter’s Clementine house, rue du Maréchal Leclerc (formerly rue de Paris) since 1897 a street in Ecouen bears his name.

Now, where are these works? The research members of the Association Théophile HINGRE have helped fuel the headings "His sculptures" and "His paintings" of this site. These are essentially private works.  Many of the sculptures were commissioned by the goldsmiths or presented at the Salon des Artistes French. The posters were commissioned by companies advertising.  All fuels the market for works of art. His public works which we are known to be reduced to a single wword, "Chicken", on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Troyes.  Works had been bequeathed to the city of Ecouen in 1884 by the artist and in 1926 by his daughter Clementine.  The document from the city of Ecouen "a colony of artists in the nineteenth century" (2007) indicates the absence.

The "Association Théophile Hingre" (courriel@hingre-lt.fr) founded in 2001 has undertaken to maintain the memory of this artist in the city of Ecouen (Val d'Oise) where he died.
