I Want You (Uncle Sam) Mastered directly from an 1917 original lithograph. Here is the very first version of Uncle Sam. Created in 1917, by the artist James Montgomery Flagg, who looked much like the man pointing at you. This is, without a doubt, the most famous war-time/ recruiting poster this country has ever seen. This self portrait of Flagg established a face for Uncle Sam and a face for the rest of the world.
